Proclamation 48 of 1972 removed the square-lipped rhino from the specially protected to the protected game schedule of the Game Preservation Ordinance, 11 of 1955. The black rhino remains on the specially protected game schedule.

During 1972, 448 white rhino were captured. Of these, 151 were exported, 255 disposed off locally, amnd 42 being on hand at end of year. Of overseas exports, 75 went to USA, 61 to United Kingdom, 15 elsewhere in Europe. Grand total of white rhinos translocated since inception of capture project to 31 March 1973 stood at 1339.
