This popular print from Johann Jacob Scheuchzer’s Physica Sacra (1731) shows that the cognoscenti of the day still believe that Dürer’s was the true image for the rhino. The Hebrew word Ré em (used below the image) in the Bible was thought to mean rhinoceros.
