Roeting copy of Galle

1572090807

From archives of T.H. Clarke, with this note attached: This is a copy of the Galle engraving [showing the Madrid rhinoceros] by Lazarus Roeting (or Rotingus) of Nuremberg, 1549-1614. It is included in a collection of natural history drawings, mostly by Roeting, some by friends, assembled by his nephew Michael Rotenbeck (1568-1623), with the grandiloquent title of Theatrum Naturae and dated 1615. It shows that Durer had no monopoly. The text is an abbreviation of the Galle inscription or legend. In the Berlin Museum fur Naturkunde.
