Rhinoceros tormenting the damned in the “heaven and hell” gallery at Angkor Wat, Cambodia

1707401646

In the bas reliefs of the temple at Angkor Wat (Siem Reap, Cambodia) there are at least three depictions of rhinos. The present illustration shows the one in the east wing of the South Gallery where a rhinoceros is attacking the damned in the panel depicting Heaven and Hell (12th century).
In the Siem Reap area, at the Ta Prohm temple (one kilometer east of Angkor Thom) another rhino carving is present. Also known as the “Stegodon of Ta Prohm” it has been an object of speculation by pseudo scientists.
