Engraving of “Portrait du Male du Rhinoceros” issued at the time of the passage of Clara through Paris in 1749. It is interesting to note the change of sex in the text. Since Clara did not resemble the Dürer rhino, the latter was thought to depict the male with an extra horn on the withers. There is a stronge resemblence of this etching to the woodcut image included in Jean Baptiste Ladvocat’s Lettre sur le Rhinoceros of the same year.
