This is French rococo artist Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s (1686-1755) drawing of Clara done when the animal was in Paris in 1749. It became the most reproduced image of Clara when an engraving was included in Georges-Louis Leclerc’s, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) encyclopedic Histoire naturelle, which began publication in the same year. Oudry also made a larger than life-size painting of Clara that is in the Staatliches Museum in Schwerin.
