Tapistry. Cheval Rayé from the Series Nouvelles Indes. H. 423 cm, B. 553 cm. Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, Inv. No. T 3958 – T 3859 (Tenture des Indes)
The tapestry shows a zebra being attacked by a leopard in a river landscape, surrounded by other exotic animals and plants. The tapestry has a surprising wealth of colourful and imaginative details. In 1810, Emperor Napoleon presented this and another tapestry from the venerable Gobelin manufactory as diplomatic gifts to the Bavarian King Max I Joseph and his wife Karoline; the same year in which the Paris Treaty between France and Bavaria was concluded for the regional consolidation of territories. The imperial ‘N’ woven into the textile gold frame can hardly be overlooked.
