Rhinoceros from the first edition of Sebastian Münster’s (1488-1552) Cosmographey oder Beschreibung aller Länder, first published in 1544, which was used before the David Kandel woodcut. The print is referenced in Bartsch 136; Meder 273; Hollstein273; Strauss 176 and Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 241. Münster’s book was the first to use Dürer’s rhinoceros as illustration.
