M E Ridinger 1750

1216141128
Part of collection

It is one of two rhino prints from the Thier-Reich series by Ridinger’s son using his father’s drawings. Ridinger’s son Martin Elias Ridinger (1730-1780) would later use other earlier drawings of his father’s and issue three more prints of the rhinoceros in 1760 in his father’s name. Two prints are in the series entitled Thier-Reich. The first, unique in its depiction, is a side view of the animal leaping (Ill. 5. 21), which Clara would do when raged or hungry. 6 The second print shows the animal lying down (Ill. 7.6). (The third print is the fight with the elephant in a set of eight plates of animals fighting, Kämpfe reissender Thiere.)
