Indian rhinoceros drawn by an unknown artist. From the Marquess Wellesley collection of drawings (NHD 32 f.47). A similar drawing is in Cambridge.
When Richard, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760–1842) was Governor-General of India 1798–1805, he assembled a large collection of drawings (British Library, London). This includes a watercolour of a rhino with a rope around the neck, without inscription (Archer 1962). A very similar folio is found in the Hardwicke Collection (Natural History Museum, London), with the following inscription in pencil: “Rhinoceros unicornis. – drawn from a living animal in possession of Asoph-ud Dowlah – Vizir – Lucnow 1789”
