Rinoceronte. A large hand-coloured engraved plate of a rhinoceros in landscape, in the background a rhino next to an elephant, signed: ‘Giarre inc.’. With an extensive educational text below, starting: “I Rinoceronti sono grossi quadrupedi pachidermi,…”. An engraved plate from the rare Italian colour plate book: “Zoologia morale esposta in cento venti Discorsi in versi o in prosa … colle notizie scientifice.” by Domenico Gazzadi & Antonio Baschieri, (Florence, Vincenzo Batelli & Co.,1843-(46). The illustration was drawn by Giarre after the rhinoceros (plate 14) in the: “Descrizioni degli Animali” by Innocenti Alessandri & Pietro Scattiglio (Venice, Carlo Palese, 1771-75), but originally designed by Pietro Antonio Novello III (1729-1804).
