This first edition is identified by five full lines of text above the image. It is the only edition made during Dürer’s lifetime and is usually a high quality impression without a horizontal crack that later developed through the legs. Although Dürer never saw the animal, its arrival in europe for the first time since the third century AD was an extremely important event to be published and the artist’s fame made the print very popular and successful.
