Cavagmole game 1765

1765 Cavagnole Biribi

The game mentioned by Guiard as planned by the Marquis of Biribi was invented around 1750 in Genoa. It was known as Biribi (or Biribissi), or more common as Cavagnole. It was a gambling game of chance, popular for some years especially in Italy and France, played on a board of cards with various illustrations. Several examples are known where a rhinoceros is depicted on the board or on the cards. An obvious portrait of Clara is not clearly identified on the known examples.

This example of Cavagnole dated ca. 1765

Guiard de Servigne, J.B. 1750. Le rhinoceros, poeme en prose divise en six chants, par M.elle de ***. Paris, [no publisher]. pp. i-xvi, 17-28, 1-80.
