Depiction of a rhino hunt by William Burchell in 1812. This aquatint illustrates a scene which he describes in detail in chapter 2 of vol 2 of his “Travels in the interior of Southern Africa”, first published in 1822 but reprinted several times. It is on pp 71 – 79 of the 1822 edition.
For some reason his rhino hunt illustration was never used in his book. The original was sold to the Library of Parliament in 1928 by his great-grandnephew Mr L L Burchell of Cape Town. Published here by kind permission of the Library of Parliament, Cape Town, South Africa
