an unusually hairy rhino

This image of an unusually hairy rhino after Dürer, published in 1781 under the title ‘Spectacle de la nature et des arts’ / ‘Schauplatz der Natur und der Kunste’, vol. 7, Vienna, Joseph Kurzbock appears retrogressive, considering that live animals had been traveling throughout Europe for almost forty years. The numbers on and around the body probably describes it’s uniqueness, but the unusable dorsal horn appears to be explained as a mere tuft of hair.
