Broadsheet issued to advertise the exhibition of Clara, the Dutch rhinoceros in the town of Middelburg in August 1742. The broadsheet has no illustration, only text. The title is 5 lines with Rynoceros in large letters, followed by text in 24 lines and 4 lines of local information.
The annotation is by Pieter Boddaert (source 7802).

Met Permissie van de Ed. Groot Achtbare Heeren der Stad Middelburg
Word bekend gemaakt, dat alhier gearriveert is Het levendige groote wonder dier RYNOCEROS.
Zynde de eenigste in geheel Europe, en van zoo’n wonderlyke lighaams gestalte, dat de Wysheid en Almacht van den Schepper dezer groote Dieren, daar in met verwonderinge, en eerbiedigheid is te beschouwen. Dit wonderdier is donker bruin van Couleur; heeft geen hairen, als aan de ooren, en ‘t einde van de staart: op de neus is het gewapend met een hoorn, waar van het zich dediend in ‘t vegten met een Oliphant, die het doorgaans overwind. De oogen zyn na proportie van de andere deelen zeer klein: de huid is als met Schilden bedekt, en staat wel een hand breed over malkander; gelykt na een kleed, rok en Schippers broek, zood at geen kleermaker voor ‘t zelve een beter kleed zou konnen maken als waar mede het de Natuur heeft begaaft. De voeten zyn kort en dik, voorzien met drie klaauwen: ‘t kan zwemmen en duiken als een Eend.
Deze Rynoceros is in Asia, onder ‘t gebied van den Grooten Mogol, in ‘t Landschap Assem gevangen, en met het schip Knapenhof uit Bengalen na Holland overgebragt. Het Dier is zoo tam als een Lam, dewyl het zeer jong gevangen is, en uit Curiositeit twee Jaaren als een Hondje om de tafel geloopen heeft, daar Heeren en Dames aaten.
‘t Voorschreven Dier eet tot dagelyks onderhoud 70 pond hooy, 15 pond brood, en drinkt 14 emmers water: het is tegenwoordig 18 Jaren oud en is 6000 pond zwaar, zoo dat het nog vele Jaren moet wassen, dewyl deze dieren 150 tot 200 Jaaren oud werden, en van Keizers, Koningen, en van verscheide Prinsen en Potentaten met veel verwondering gezien is.
Dit Dier kan ‘s morgens van 8 tot 12 uuren, en van 2 tot [x] uuren, met onderscheid van Persoonen voor 2, 4, en 6 stuivers gezien worden.
De Vertoonplaats is in de Tent, op de groote Markt, voor de Rethorykamer, daar de Schildery voorhangt.

It is announced that the living, great wonder of Rynocerus has arrived here.
Being the only one in all of Europe, and of such a wondrous physical form that the Wisdom and Omnipotence of the Creator of these great animals are to be regarded with amazement and reverence. This wondrous animal is dark brown in color; has no hair, except on the ears and the end of the tail. On the nose, it is armed with a horn, which it uses in fighting an elephant, which it usually overpowers. The eyes are very small in proportion to the other parts; the skin is covered as if with shields, and extends a hand’s breadth apart; similar to a dress, skirt, and sailor’s trousers, so that no tailor could make a better dress for it than that with which Nature has endowed it. The feet are short and thick, equipped with three claws: it can swim and dive like a duck. This Rhinoceros was captured in Asia, under the rule of the Great Mogul, in the region of Assem, and brought over from Bengal to Holland on the ship Knapenhof. The animal is as tame as a lamb, having been captured very young, and out of curiosity, it spent two years like a little dog at the table where gentlemen and ladies dined.
The aforementioned animal eats 70 pounds of hay, 15 pounds of bread, and drinks 14 buckets of water for its daily sustenance. It is currently 18 years old and weighs 6,000 pounds, so it still has many years to grow, as these animals have lived to be 150 to 200 years old and have been seen with much admiration by emperors, kings, and various princes and potentates.
This animal can be seen in the morning from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and from 2 p.m. to [x] p.m., with different people for 2, 4, and 6 stuivers.
The exhibition location is in the tent on the main market square, in front of the Rethory Room, where the painting is displayed.
