On 2 February 1748, a Dutch companion of the rhinoceros stabbed a local worker three times when the crowd was too oppressive for Clara. Douwe Mout paid a fine of 300 francs on 21 February 1748 (source 3901).
Liestal is 20 km east of Basel.
Gasthof “Zum Schlüssel” was built in 1436 in Waldenburg, just south of Liestal.

When she arrived in her wagon at the Zum Schlissel inn for the night in the small town of Liestal, some of the inhabitants did not want to miss the chance of seeing the famous phenomenon with their own eyes. A riot broke out, people became increasingly aggressive, and in the end one of Mout’s assistants drew his sabre and stabbed the local smithy as many as three times. Not only was the assistant arrested, but Clara herself was also detained for two days. He was taken off to Basel and Clara would have been locked in a stable on the spot. Fortunately, the situation calmed down. Three weeks later Mout had to pay a hefty fine on behalf of his assistant, but that was the end of it. The residents were found guilty of causing the unrest.

[p.311] Basel den 2. dito [Februarius].
Alß der Wagen mit dem Kasten darin das Renoceros oder Naßhorn gewesen, nach Liechstal kommen, und vor dem Wirdshauß zum Schlissel gestanden, sind die Burger haufen weiß zu gelofen und habens wollen besehen, der Knecht des Thiers aber hat solches nicht leiden wollen, darauf sind sie in word streid kommen und entlich zu schlagen, deß der einde Knecht sein Sabel genohmen, und dar mit einem Burger von Liechstal genant Singeisen der Schmid 3 Wunden versetzet, eine in Arm und zwoo in Kopf, da haben die Burger gleich der Thätter in Verhaft genohmen, und auch das Thier 2. Tag im Arrest behalten, biß der H. Capitain Von der Meer zu Basel Caution gestellet vor 2000 f. der Knecht aber hat man gefänglich nach Baßel geführet.

Ist der Streit so wegen dem Naßhorn zu Liechstal enstanden, aber vor E: E: Raht auß gesprochen worden; dar weil die Liechstaler an dem Streit die Ursacher gewesen, so ist der H: Capitain Von der Meer in 300 f. zu zahlen weil der Knecht mit dem Sabel den anderen verwundet hat, der Knecht aber wider auf freyen fuß gestelt worden.
