History of Clara

1747 / Linz, Austria

A broadsheet with the rhinoceros was sold in Linz in November 1746 when Clara was still in Vienna (source 2951). There is no evidence that Clara was exhibited in Linz.

Linz is a town 180 km west of Vienna, and 130 km east of Salzburg.

* Elias Münzer / Mintzer / Müntzer (1685–1765), bookseller in Linz, address Obere Vorstadt nr. 111. His shop taken over probably in 1747 by his son Franz Xaver Münzer (1721–1794).

NB. Bey Elias Müntzer, Burgerl. Buchbinder allhier, ist zu haben: Eigentliche Vorstellung des den 30. Octo. Anno 1746. in Wienn auf einen mit 8. Pferden bespannten Wagen unter Begleitung 8. Courasiers neu-angekommen Asiatischen Wunderthiers Rhinoceros, oder Nasen-Horn genannt, welches täglich ein grosses Quantum verzehret; in Kupfer gestochen, samt einer ordentlichen Erklärung von diesem Thier, das Stuck schwartz pr. 4 Kr., illuminierter pr. 7 Kr.

English translation

NB. Available from Elias Müntzer, local bookbinder, is: An actual presentation of the newly arrived Asian wonder animal, the rhinoceros, or nose horn, which devours a large quantity daily, on October 30, 1746, in Vienna in a carriage drawn by eight horses and accompanied by eight couriers. Engraved in copper, with a thorough explanation of this animal. The piece costs 4 kr. per piece in black, and 7 kr. per piece in illuminated form.
