History of Clara

1741 / Rotterdam Harbour, Netherlands

The ship Knappenhof [maybe erroneously: Knapenhof] with Douwe Mout as Captain left Bengal (Calcutta harbour) on 30 November 1740. They rested at the Cape of Good Hope from 2 to 16 March 1741 (source 1601). Separated from the main fleet due to misty and bad weather on 24 June 1741, they sailed “around the north”, i.e. around Ireland and Scotland on the northern side, increasing the time of their journey (Source 1602). They landed in Goeree on 20 July 1741, and then continued in few days via Hellevoetsluis to the harbour of Rotterdam at the mouth of the River Maas, where they reached 22 July 1741 (Source 1602, source 1603). The Knappenhof belonged to the Dutch East India Co., Chamber of Delft.
