Census on 17 and 18 March 1966 and then tabulated. A total of 366 rhinos were tallied: 172 non-sexed, 67 adult males, 83 adult females, 44 young. Most of the rhino were seen in the baguri block, 157 adult rhino and 23 out of 44 calves. - I am certain there are at least 400 rhinos in the sanctuary. |

There were a number of reports during 1964 and 1965 concerning the slaughter of rhinos inside the sanctuary. Although some of these reports were clearly exaggerated and others appeared to be unfounded, the Forest Dept. decided to do a census. |
