5. 'Game Sanctuaries'. - Assam has game sanctuaries in the plains, but none for hill game, and it is clearly desirable that suitable areas should be set aside as opportunity offers. I have discussed the matter with the Political Officer and he will send up a proposal to reserve the upper Diyun Valley, at the head of which is the Chaukan Pass. On the north-east and south-west it is bounded by ranges running up to 13,000 and 8,000 feet, respectively, and is entirely uninhabited. It contains no mineral wealth as far as is known and it would be impossible to extract timber from it. The Political Officer who has been in the valley, reports that the scenery is magnificent, an important asset if the game sanctuary is ever converted into a National Park. Ample empty land would be excluded to the north-west on which the Political Officer would much like to settle Kachins as the Kachin villages in the area badly need new blood.
