Times of India, 17 March 1885. Curious accident in the harbour. His Highness Aga Ali Shah had arranged to send a rhinoceros and an elephant as presents to his majesty the Shah of Persia, by British India Navigation Company’s steamer “Java”, which was to leave the same day. The rhinoceros was taken in a padow alongside the steamer, but the animal while being hoisted on deck rushed forward with such violence that the trappings gave way and it fell headlong into the sea, and after swimming about for a while, it was drowned.
