Black Rhino |
Five black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicomis) were examined, and two of them died of acute intravascular haemolysis. Signs of recurrent haemolysis with haemosiderosis in various organs were recorded from four animals. Hyporegenerative mucosal atrophy, as is known as a consequence of infection by an enteropathogenic virus, was established in the small intestines of all rhinos investigated. A pathogenetic relationship is discussed between episodic outbreaks of haemolytic anaemia, on the one hand, and causes underlying hyporegenerative atrophy ofmucosa, on the other.
