Itala Nature reserve was proclaimed in 1973 with an area of 8094 ha, and subsequently enlarged through the acquisition of additional farmland to its present size of 26305 ha.
Ceratotherium simum At present 34 animals oiccur within the amphitheatre and the eastern sector of the reserve, both areas comprising lowveld and middleveld vegetation types. Of the 34 animals, 11 were born in the reserve, whereas the original 23 were reintroduced from Ndumu, Umfolozi and Vernon Crooks nature reserves since October 1974.
Diceros bicornis Twenty animals were reintroduced between 1973 and 1980, of which 2 died. A calf was born during 1977 and another during 1979.
