In a similarly uncertain way we heard from several Malays and Dayaks that there would be rhinoceroses in Borneo in some places. The same rumour was reported by earlier travellers and is found in Ritter's Erdkunde, although nobody says anything about the species. According to a rough sketch of a Bejadjoe-Dayak, who said that he had seen once, when he was still young, a male rhinoceros in the upper reaches of the Kahayan River, the animal has the size of a large buffalo, and he has only one horn. This begs the question if it may be Rhinoceros sondaicus, which species until now is only known from Java, or that the rhinoceros of Borneo is like the animals of the mainland, or constitute a separate species.
