Transvaal - Ceratotherium simum. Two animals were introduced in 1964 and four in 1966. By 1983 there were 59 in provincial nature reserves, with a rate of increase of 2-8%. By 1983 about 60% of the province had
been surveyed, and 336 white rhinos were counted on 30 private ranches. We estimate that the Transvaal holds about 500 animals.
The Transvaal Nature Conservation Division only permits a ranch to have rhinos after an inspection has been made: the Division also does a follow-up. The necessity for bomas is
individually assessed.
