Less than 100 survived in Zululand by 1900 (although the official estimate was 10). These increased to an estimated 2250 in 1972, despite significant removals, and the population in 1983 now stands at about 1600. Translocation started in 1961, and to date about 3150 have been moved; this policy is governed to a large extent bv the veld condition.
The populations are distributed as follows:-
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi ca. 1450 (the only natural population, and at carrying capacity).
Ndumu 50 (at carrying capacity)
Mkuzi 40
Itala 40
Weenen 4
