Description: |
The Coelodonta antiquitatis (Blum.) from the lower Kolyma River (Sakha Republic, Siberia, Russia). This is a nearly complete frozen mummy of an adult woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis Blum., 1799) discovered in a gold mine on the lower reaches of the Kolyma River, N-E Siberia in 2007. It even preserves the intestines, stomach, and their contents. This represents the first find of the whole body of woolly rhino in permafrost. The skull with both the horns is also preserved. A rib fragment from this individual was dated by AMS-radiocarbon method to 39,140 ± 390 years BP. Paintings of woolly rhinos are present in some ancient caves (Chauvet, Altamira, Lascaux) (photo by Magnus Manske). |
