Ribbius, 1682. It depicts the wild animals of Africa & Asia. In the background the fortress and Table Mountain, Capetown, South Africa. The engraver is Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708).The plate was republished twenty years later by the Dutch mapmaker and publisher Pietre Boudewyn van der Aa (1659-1733) The interpretation of the rhino is porcine in nature like those of Paré and Thevet. |
