"An alliance offensive and defensive is entered into. Part of Comic sequence by Ernest Henri Griset (1844-1907) illustrating the release of a rhinoceros from a pitfall by the adventurous Cornelius Cracker, Esq. The story is in the captions. Cracker falls in the pit, followed by a lion and then a large rhinoceros. With the pit now full, the rhino first helps the dangerous lion to escape, followed by a lift upwards to Cracker. Finally Cracker digs the rhino to freedom: “Oh, does not a parting like this make amends?” (Published in a volume edited by Tom Hood (1835-1874), The 5 alls, 1868, pp. 38-39). |
