Collaert II 1612 |
Author: |
Adriaen Collaert II |
Year: |
1612 |
Description: |
This is from an album of 34 animal prints by Adriaen Collaert II (1545-1608), entitled Animalium Quadrupedum. The Collaert image is of interest in that he is one of the few to use as his model the 'Madrid' rhino of 1586 by Philippe Galle. It is known that Collaert was Galle's son-in-law. This is the original edition. Note that the rhino faces left with an elephant hunt in the background. Collaert's name is in the lower left and the number two is placed to the right of the stump. There exists at least 4 variants of this print (different backgrounds) or plagiarised editions such as by Visscher, Fredrick de Witte of Amsterdam, P. Firens and Pontano. |
