"Rhinoceros bicornis" and "unicornis" after the Sumatran rhino of Bell and the Indian rhino by Buffon. The plate is numbered "Plate CCCCXXXVIII" and signed "A. Bell Prin.Wal. sculptor fecit." From the 3rd edition of Andrew Bell's 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' published in 1797. Together with Colin Macfarquhar, Andrew Bell (1726-1809) founded the Encyclopaedia Britannica in Edinburgh. |
