This engraving is the Visscher edition of Adrien Collaert II (c.1560-1618) is one of a series of 34 prints. The Collaert image is of interest in that he is one of the few to use as his model the 'Madrid' rhino of 1586 by Philippe Galle. It is known that Collaert was Galle's son-in-law. There exists at least 3 variants of this print (different backgrounds) or plagiarised editions such as by Fredrick de Witte of Amsterdam, P. Firens and Pontano. |
