I am undergoing my first cow and calf separation in preparation for shipping the calf out in spring '08. I am looking for any advice I can get. The concensus I have gotten so far is that it is best to separate them somewhat gradually and then never put them back together. Unfortunately, that is not possible at our facility. (We will hopefully be building a new barn and exhibit in the next few years). Due to space restrictions, the cow and calf can be separated during the day, but need to be together again overnight. I believe that is why I am having trouble accomplishing separation. I have been doing separation in some capacity for almost a year, and the calf still paces and cries the whole time she is separated.
I was hoping to find someone who may have dealt with a similar situation that could provide some insight. If we do not get them comfortable being apart before the calf leaves I am afraid she will be traumatized. I have heard of such situations, where the rhino acts like a baby for the rest of it's life.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
