I would greatly appreciate the opinion of the many experienced rhino keepers who have posted on this board concerning the personality of white rhinos, both in general and individually. The majority are under the impression that rhinos are essentially brainless hulks with little or no personality. I've found this to be very untrue from research and from speaking to rhino keepers here in Florida. The keepers I've spoken to at both the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Fl and Disney's Animal Kingdom both paint an endearing picture of white rhinos. Easily trained, stubborn at times, gentle, loving belly scratches, generally a very, very large puppy dog. I thought the fact that white rhinos bond to individuals and not to people as a whole was very intersesting as well. The RRC has some very revealing accounts of white rhino behaviour and personality. I would really enjoy hearing the thoughts of our rhino keepers and other experienced ones about this subject.

Hello,
I am not very experienced but I spent 3 months in Dvur Kralove.
All the whites have different personality, one of the girls doesn't notice we are here, another comes "asking" for strokings...but in general, they all very like when we have time to itch the belly or any part of the body. It was the same in CERZA zoo in France with southern whites and i think in Montpellier zoo in France too, one on the female is "agressive" and the other is like a dog... they have their own personality.
( sorry for my english )
Cyrielle.

At the minute I look after 7 white rhino and they all have individual personalities. I believe all animals do given the time to observe them. The girls are all very different from being very jumpy and nervous to being able to stand right next to them. The bull is incredibly soft (as soft as a bull rhino can be) but he is very good with the girls and is successful.
I was surprised just how much personality the rhino have. Our babies are developing their own personalities now and it is great to watch them grow up and learn.

You might like to get a copy of Rhino at the brink of extinction by Anna Merz of Lewa Downs in Kenya - talks a lot about the personalities of the rhinos she has worked with, black and white. She felt they had distinct personalities - it has a chapter "Rhinos as Individuals".

Hello, I've got that book! I bought it last year at the Rhino may Day 2007, and I met her ( Anna Merz ) this year, at the Rhino May Day too, in London.
It is an amazing story, I would like to live something similar but times have changed !
Thank you anyway.
edit : And I met you, I took the picture of you with Kees
