The Basel Zoo has just published the latest edition of the studbook of the Indian rhino. It contains information of all individual rhinos in the world's zoos on 31 December 2006. A great achievement.

Studbooks are documents of immense importance to the management of zoo populations in a scientific and responsible manner. This latest edition of the studbook of the Indian rhinoceros, kept by Basel Zoo, shows that at the end of 2006 there were 158 Indian rhinos, 78 males and 80 females, in 59 institutions around the world. In 2006 there were 8 births, registered in Oklahoma, San Diego Wild Animal Park (3), Lisbon, Stuttgart, New York and Whipsnade. It is one of the ambitions of the RRC to show a picture in the image gallery of every rhinoceros shown in captivity, both in the past and at present. This of course can only be achieved with cooperation of zoo personnel and visitors. It would give a kind of visual studbook that has never been seen before.

Kees,
That sounds like a great initiative. I hope the keepers already on this forum will be able to help you out and maybe spread the word.
Are there studbooks for every species or just for the indian rhino?

There are studbooks for all rhino species kept in captivity. Therefore, there isn't one for the Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) because none are now in a zoo. The studbooks of the black and white rhino have been kept by the Berlin Zoo, and they have published 10 editions. With the increase of especially white rhinos in managed situations, the people in Berlin have done a great job to keep all the data. The studbook of the Sumatran rhino has been kept by Tom Foose of IRF, and I am sure that a successor to his work will be found.
